WordPress Error: Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser

WordPress Must Enable Cookies Warning

You’ve had this problem and it has driven you crazy, hasn’t it?

ERROR: Cookies are blocked or not supported by your browser. You must enable cookies to use WordPress.

Here’s a possible solution:

You might have accidentally copy/pasted a carriage return into your site URL or home field.

It took me a while to figure it out, but I finally deleted*, then re-typed each character into these fields.

Problem solved. No more cookie alert.

*make sure to CTRL+A and Delete to make sure no remnants remain in the field.

Update: there can be a lot more to this issue. Take a look at this recently updated thread on WordPress.org.

Update 2: make sure to clear cookies, close all browser windows and try again. If that doesn’t work, read the thread above that links to WordPress.org.

  1. Google led me here – in great hope I might add! Alas, I tried what you suggested (both via the wordpress admin site and directly in the MySQL db) to no avail. Was there anything else you tried around the same time that might have helped?

    Thanks…

    • Hi Damian,

I can’t recall, unfortunately. Did you clear your cookies after doing so (and completely restart your browser)? Also, if you’re running a WordPress cache you should clear that completely, too.

I think I may have tried this stuff: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/error-cookies-are-blocked-or-not-supported-by-your-browser-1

But whatever it was in there I reverted to the way it was because I didn’t want to chase my tail.

One other dumb thing that might help is going into Permalinks and clicking Save.

And…try a couple different browsers – make sure you clear cookies.

    • Hi Mayur,

Did you CTRL+A delete, then type it in? Sometimes the return character can be left behind. I updated the post to reflect doing this process.
